How to Use Soap Nuts: The Complete Guide to Eco-Friendly Laundry

Embracing sustainable habits — like swapping out harsh chemical cleaners for natural alternatives — is a practical way to practice environmental stewardship while protecting our families.
Enter soap nuts (or soap berries), nature’s raw, eco-friendly laundry detergent and home cleaner!
What Are Soap Nuts?
Known scientifically as Sapindus Mukorossi, soap nuts are the dried fruits of the soapberry tree. The flesh of these fruits contains natural saponin, which acts as a gentle, effective cleanser.
Instead of relying on synthetic chemical detergents, soap nut liquid can be used to wash clothes, clean floors, bathe, wash hair, and more.
Why Make the Switch?
Good for the Earth: Conventional chemical detergents can be pollutive to our waterways. Soap nut liquid is made from 100% natural fruit, making it entirely biodegradable and gentle on the environment.
Gentle on Sensitive Skin: Free from synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals, soap nut cleaner removes dirt safely. It is ideal for babies, delicate skin, and those suffering from skin conditions like eczema.
Saves Money: Making your own liquid or enzyme can save you at least half of what you would normally spend on store-bought chemical cleaners.
Recipe A: All-Purpose Soap Nut Liquid
Great for general cleaning, laundry, and body wash.
Ingredients & Equipment:
- 10–15 soap nuts
- 1 liter water
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 5 drops of essential oil (optional)
- Optional for shampoo: 2 tbsp flaxseeds (acts as a hair conditioning agent)
Instructions:
- Rinse 10–15 soap nuts with water to remove any surface dirt.
- Place the nuts in a pot with 1 liter of water (add flaxseeds here if making shampoo).
- Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Allow the liquid to cool.
- Filter the liquid through a fine sieve to remove any sediment.
- Stir in 2 tbsp of vinegar and optional essential oils.
Tip: You can reuse the boiled soap nuts by repeating steps 2–5 one more time! Be sure to squeeze the softened nuts to extract all the saponin. Spent shells can then be composted or added directly to your houseplant soil as nutrient-rich organic matter.
Recipe B: Soap Nut Enzyme Cleaner
Enzymes provide extra cleaning power, making this ideal for oily kitchen surfaces and dishwashing.
Ingredients & Equipment:
- 250g soap nuts
- 200g sugar
- 2 liters water
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp dry yeast
- 5L (or larger) plastic container with lid
Instructions:
- Rinse 250g of soap nuts.
- In your plastic container, thoroughly mix the sugar, water, cinnamon, and dry yeast.
- Add the rinsed soap nuts, cover securely, and place in a warm, dry area.
- Week 1: Open the container daily, gently stir the mixture once, and replace the cover.
- Weeks 2–3: Stir only once per week. Skim off and remove any thick film layer that forms on top.
- After 3 weeks, your fermented enzyme liquid is ready to strain and use!
Tip: You can reuse the spent soap nuts with a fresh batch of sugar, water, yeast, and cinnamon to start another batch.
Recipe C: Quick Soap Nut Laundry Bag
The fastest way to use raw soap nuts on wash day.
Instructions:
- Place 5–8 soap nuts into a small cotton drawstring bag or sock, and tie it securely.
- Soak the tied bag in hot water for 15 minutes to activate the saponin.
- Toss both the bag and the soaking water directly into your washing machine load.
- Reuse the bag for 2–3 laundry loads (add 1 or 2 fresh soap nuts to top it up each time)

Soap Nut Enzyme: Store in a covered container in a cool spot away from direct sunlight for up to 6–12 months.
